What to ask before booking a bridal make-up artist
On your wedding day, your make-up has to survive tears, heat, hugs, a long reception and hundreds of photos. The right make-up artist makes that look effortless. Here are the questions to ask before you pay a deposit.
Can I see your bridal portfolio?
Ask for photos of real brides, not only styled shoots. Look for:
- brides with a skin tone close to yours;
- the style you want, whether soft glam or full glam;
- photos in different light, including outdoor and flash.
Do you offer a trial?
A trial lets you agree on the look, see how it photographs and test how long it lasts. Bring photos of looks you love, and wear something close to your outfit's neckline and colour. Ask whether the trial fee comes off the final price.
What exactly does the price include?
Get the details in writing:
- make-up for the bride, and the price per person for the bridal party;
- lashes, and whether they are strip or individual;
- gele tying, if you need it;
- touch-ups during the day, or a touch-up kit;
- travel to your venue or hotel, and any early-morning fee.
A clear quotation now avoids surprises later. Many artists on LuxeFlow send a quotation you can accept online, which then becomes your booking.
How much is the deposit, and when is the balance due?
Bridal bookings usually need a deposit to hold your date. Ask:
- how much the deposit is, and that it counts towards the total;
- when the balance is due;
- what happens if you need to change the date or cancel.
Pay through a recorded, secure method so you have proof of payment.
What time will you arrive, and how long do you need?
Work backwards from when you need to be ready. Ask how long the bride takes and how long each member of the bridal party takes, and make sure there is time to spare.
What products do you use?
If you have sensitive skin or allergies, say so and ask about the products. Long-wear and waterproof products matter on a hot day.
Do you have a team?
For a large bridal party, one artist may not be enough. Ask whether they bring assistants, and who will do your face.
Book early
Good bridal artists are booked months ahead, especially in December. You can find and compare make-up artists, with real reviews and prices, in the LuxeFlow app. And for the rest of your beauty plans, read how to find a good hair salon near you.
